Treatments in the Netherlands for unwanted pregnancy

Are you with an unwanted pregnancy? In this situation, it is good to know that abortion in the Netherlands has been legal since 1981. You can decide for yourself up to 22 weeks of pregnancy whether to continue or terminate the pregnancy. Depending on the length of pregnancy and personal preference, there are several treatment options available.

Abortion pill (5 to 8 weeks of pregnancy)

The abortion pill is suitable for pregnancies up to 8 weeks. This medicated abortion consists of two different agents that stop and then abort the pregnancy. The treatment is in two stages: first, a pill is taken at the clinic that stops the pregnancy, followed by a second drug that is taken at home a few days later to abort the pregnancy. The doctor at the clinic assesses whether this treatment is appropriate.

Suction curettage (5 to 12 weeks of pregnancy)

For pregnancies up to and including 12 weeks, suction curettage is an option. In this treatment, the pregnancy is removed via vacuum aspiration. The procedure takes place under anesthesia, choosing between local anesthesia or sedation (sedation). The stay in the clinic lasts about 4 hours.

Abortion day treatment (13 to 22 weeks of pregnancy)

For pregnancies between 13 and 22 weeks, a day treatment is necessary. The exact procedure and duration of treatment vary depending on the gestational age. At 18 to 22 weeks’ gestation, the treatment always takes place under sedation (intoxication). Two to three hours before the treatment, a medication is administered that makes the cervix flexible and causes some dilation. After sedation, the pregnancy is removed. The stay in the clinic usually lasts 6 to 8 hours.

Procedure and aftercare

For any abortion treatment, there is first a discussion with a doctor about the patient’s decision and health. Then ultrasound is used to determine the exact duration of the pregnancy to determine the appropriate treatment method. After treatment, the clinic offers counseling and advice on appropriate contraceptive methods to prevent future unwanted pregnancies.

In the Netherlands, a physician’s referral for an abortion is not required and there is no mandatory reflection period. After treatment, one can go home the same day; overnight stays at the clinic are not required. All treatments are safe and do not affect fertility. With sedation, it is important to note that one may not drive or operate other vehicles on one’s own during the following 24 hours.

It is important that the choice to have an abortion is deliberate and voluntary. Professional counseling and aftercare are available to support women during this process.
